“NOW?” GWEN STARED at the man who’d made her arms feel like jelly. Who’d made other places feel like jelly, too.

“No time like the present.” He jumped to his feet, his leg muscles flexing nicely at near eye level.

“Why are you still sitting on the couch?” he asked from above her.

Other than enjoying the great view? “I like it on the couch.”

“You can sit on the couch later. Now it’s time to exercise.”

Oh, that. Gwen had never been much of an exercise junkie and therefore, lacked the nifty little Spandex outfits the women on the late-night commercials wore. Not that she’d wear them if she had them. “Go back to your apartment, I’ll come over when I’m ready.”

“You get five—okay, ten minutes before I come back over here and drag you out.”

“I could lock my door.”

“And I could break it down.”

Of that, she had no doubt whatsoever. “But you wouldn’t.”

The look on his face did not reassure her. “It might be worth the repair bill just to do it.”

“You’re bluffing. You don’t have any money.”

“You’re right.” He reached the door and opened it, making a show of checking its heft and hinges. “But I do have pride,” he added quietly before gently shutting the door.

Gwen had pride, too, and she knew it was about to get bruised.

But that was okay. Sure, she’d be starting from scratch, exercise wise, but it was only for ten minutes. What was ten minutes between friends?

It was more than ten minutes later when Gwen, in wrinkled shorts and a T-shirt—what was the point of ironing cotton before packing it away for the winter?—walked down her apartment stairs, across the deserted pool area and entered Alec’s hallway. She was just climbing the stairs to his apartment, a place she’d been to less than a handful of times, when the door opened and he stuck his head out.

“Thirteen minutes, missy.”

“I forgot to allow travel time.”

Gwen was conscious of a little heavy breathing when she reached the top of the stairs. Not all of it could be attributed to the thought of being in Alec’s apartment—with Alec. “Where’s the cat?”

“Armageddon is under the bed. I shut the door.”

“You haven’t complained about him in a while.”

“Brad gave him catnip for Christmas. I think he’s been stoned ever since.” Alec gave her a half smile. “The cat, that is, although Brad did look pretty mellow.”

The door closed with an audible click. Gwen swallowed her nervousness. “I love what you’ve done with the place.”

All furniture had been pushed toward the walls and tools and exercise equipment dominated the living space. The dinette table was covered with a computer and papers. Gwen figured Alec must eat standing over the sink.

“Yeah, I’ll be glad to get back into my own place.” He gestured for her to stand by the wall and picked up a nifty-looking camera.

“Mug shots?” Gwen couldn’t help noticing that Alec seemed awfully prepared for someone who’d only had ten or so minutes to get ready.

“Before and after photos.”

She cringed. “Do
